I bought a Genie H4000A-2 in 2007, which is a screw drive model, hoping it would be more reliable than the chain types. Well, this one failed yesterday. The ...

  2. @jim cervenka, In my case, the old clip (or a chunk of it) was carried
along the screw to some unknown position. It was in there somewhere and
chewing up the carriage as it passed-by. But if I had been able to extract
all of the old clip, you're right, taking it down would not have been
    required.

  3. you went to waaaay too much trouble. those collars are about $4.00.
ordering a new one, and pop it in takes about 5 minutes. unnecessary to
take down and disassemble the track.

  4. My keeper thing also came apart then the whole track broke in half while my
truck was in the garage. luckily it didn't come down on the truck because
the screw was holding it together so i put some straps from the top of the
    track to a ceiling joist.

  6. I have these in my new house built in 2007. When I bought my original home
I installed belt drives. I tried to mess with the screw drive opener in the
new house and it's just so irritating. I think I might just take it down
and sell it AS-IS and buy me a belt drive opener.

  7. @imsmiley4u Yeah, if the motor runs, that screw should be turning, for
sure. Are you sure the whole screw is not turning? What about the part of
the screw nearest the drive motor? If the whole screw is not turning, then
it's not a "split shaft" issue, like I had. I'd take it down and remove the
rail from the motor. There's a "collar" in there that might be messed-up.
If you can test it while it's down, you could run the motor and see if the
shaft exiting the motor was turning.

  8. These things are junk anyway. Do yourself a favor and get a
    Liftmaster/Chamberlain chain drive.

  9. I have a Genie screw drive model also. I replaced the carriage because
that's what i was told was wrong with it. THe old one looks no worse for
wear than the new one but in inspecting it closer i see that the screw is
not turning when i turn it on. How can I fix this problem? I can't afford a
new closer riight now. Help?! I have a model ISL980...

  10. Disposable, hehe. I never throw anything away if I can coax more life out
of it. For me, fixing stuff is what makes life worth livin'. You'll shake
your head at this video 7OH8In1Y0zE that I put in the description of this
    video.

  12. Oh, and it's so hard to pull apart because you HAVE to do this on a flat
level surface. Telling ya man, these things were meant to be disposable.
