  1. Hi choochoochooseyou, if your computer or drive works fine for a while,
then the circuit board is working ok. If the clicking sound starts later,
it is most likely some kind of internal drive issue. I would recommend
backing up your important data asap.

Great guide. My desktop actually boots up fine. But anywhere between 2-20
mins I hear a single click as opposed to the multiple clicks in your demo,
the drive light stops, I get 'no signal' on my monitor. Fan still spins,
tower still lit up. Does that sound like the click you describe? Thank you.

  6. My hard drive's sound is much louder, sounds much worse. Does it mean that
    I can;t repair it..?

  7. How do you know if it's the circuit board and not something else that needs
    to be replaced??

  8. If your drive is slow but still working, then the circuit board is working
fine, but the hard drive could be close to death. I recommend backing up
your important data asap. After that you can check for software problems /
viruses etc, or replace the hard drive if necessary.

  11. I would like to know how you came to the conclusion that it was the board
that was the problem? I am having that same issue with a maxtor hard drive.

  15. I recommend opening the external enclosure first and see which hard drive
is inside the enclosure. Some models have firmware issues that cause the
drive to be not detected. You can email us the model number for a faster
    response.

  16. No, replacing the circuit board does not affect the data on your drive.

  18. My External HD is a Verbatim and it not doing any clicking sounds. I can
hear it spinning but my computer is not detecting it and I've tried
different USB cords it wont detect it. I am just wondering if the circuit
board is fried. I have not dropped it at all. Maybe just needs a new
    circuit.

  19. replacement of circuit board - causes loss of data or not ?

  20. what if 1 & 2 are true, also drive feels like holding an electro magnet
very wobbly, is there any way to recover data or is it lost for good at
    this point?

  21. No unfortunately not. Some of the newer drives even need a ROM chip swap,
even if all the model numbers etc. match up between two drives.
